Are people from Equatorial Guinea Hispanics, Latinos or African?

I ask this question in English and Spanish.
Hago esta pregunta en ingles y español. (Empiezo a hablar español a 0:59)

Lo siento, no hablo español muy bien.

  • One famous writer from Equatorial Guinea you should get to know is Juan Tomas Ávila Laurel. His works are in Spanish and considers himself Hispanic. Google his name to learn more about him.

  • @GeoLuzSurfer

    Thanks for the suggestion.

  • I'm from Argentina and my great-grandfather descended from spanish settlers from long time ago, but he married an italian, whose son, my grandpa, married a half british half danish woman, whose son, my dad, married a half german, half japanese woman, my mom. So, I'm hispanic, yes, I do speak spanish natively (english too, btw), but surely I'm not spanish; because I have less than a little bit of actual spanish heritage. A similar thing happens with most hispanic people, in America, or E. Guinea.

I really would like to visit la Argentina. What part of Argentina are you from? Do you speak any Japanese?

  • @auctionguy5 Dividing people into "races" only complicates thing. On the other hand, I'm from Buenos Aires, and no, I don't speak japanese, just the very very basics. If you ever come, send me a text, we can hang around.

  • @eskorbutin89

Thanks! I may just hold you to your invitation. Lol!

They are Afro-Hispanic Arabs. Lol! I don't know. This is complex. Let's just mark the box that says "human." Lol!

  • @rondonfernandes don't get me wrong, I know the word latin has been resignified, and it is being used, even if I don't like it. But this is like, when in times of colonisation, the different native american people were simply referred as "indian". Calling people latin, from my point of view, means ignoring others identity, and promoting ignorance. "we" are the new indians. Why should I be put in the same category a mexican or a chilean are?, if we are really different people.

  • The purpose of marking hispanic or Latino is to obtain advantages. It´s useless to start a discussion about race, culture or language. Is a US census thing.

  • There is an archipelago chain of islands on the north west coast of Africa, (off the coast of Morocco to be exact, these islands are known as the Canary Islands, which are an autonomous community of Spain. These islands are over 1000 miles away from Spain, and are an African archipelago, however, the people there are spanish and consider themselves hispanic/latin, based on there language, culture etc. I know a few in the states and they consider themselves hispanic. Location does not matter.

Me seguís.

  • My answer to the question of whether Equatorial Guineans are Hispanic is yes, they are. They are Hispanic because the official language of the country is Spanish. This is unlike The Phillipines where Spanish is not the primary language even though there is Hispanic history in that country. The Filipinos are non-Hispanic Asians and don't classify themselves as Hispanic/Latino. I would not apply the word Latino to Equatorial Guineans because they aren't from Latin America.
