Lindblom High School in Chicago, Illinois is named after Robert Lindblom. This video shows the bust of Mr. LIndblom on display in the school's main office at 6130 S. Wolcott Avenue. Mr. Lindblom is an inspiring figure for students at the school for many reasons. Special education students, for example, should be aware that he overcame a disability (loss of vision in one eye) to achieve remarkable success in the 1890-1907 period in Chicago in every endeavor he undertook. Lindblom students from one-parent families should be aware that he did not let the loss of both his parents before he reached the age of five deter him. Math and science students should be aware that he was a trained engineer. And students inspired by principles of justice and equality should be aware that immediately upon arriving in the United States from Sweden in the 1860s he sought to join the Union fight to free slaves. All students seeking to excel at Lindblom can take inspiration from how Mr. Lindblom continued to learn and excel over the course of his life: (2) as an author of a number of books, (3) as the publisher of a Chicago newspaper, (4) through his service on the Chicago Public School's Board of Education, (5) by advancing women's rights by supporting his daughter's efforts to become the first female member of the Chicago Board of Trade; (6) promoting worker's rights as a member of the Civil Service Board and (7) ensuring pride in the heritage of persons of Swedish descent as a moving force behind the Swedish Pavilion in the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, and in the formation of many Swedish organizations and endeavors. In these ways Mr. Lindblom was a model for how to overcome odds, take pride in your heritage, value education and public service, and the value of excelling in all that you undertake. He embodies Lindblom's longstanding motto: "To Live And Learn."
