In Irish mythology, Aengus is the god of love and youth. He falls in love with a maiden in a dream, finds her, and the two turn into swans. In William Butler Yeats's poem, Aengus is mortal, on a quest to find the "glimmering girl" whom he met by chance and who has vanished. His wandering, a life-long search for the object of his desires, represents the human inclination and yearning for love, knowledge, and perfection.
