Brooklyn Park rally unifies community -"Sun Suburbs Today" webcast - Friday, Oct. 2, 2009

Despite the rain around 100 people sang, prayed and spoke against hate crimes at the Rally Against Racism event at Zanewood Rec Center in Brooklyn Park. The rally comes only eight days after three white men allegedly attacked to black men supposedly for the color of their skin. One of the victims, Derrick Thomas, was at the rally along with state, county and local officials including Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman, Brooklyn Park Mayor Steve Lampi and many others. Prior to the rally the city held a press conference at City Hall to discuss a new bias crime response plan that will provide an improved more support network for victims of bias crimes like Thomas. A portion of County Road 81 in Brooklyn Park will close at 6 a.m. tomorrow between Brooklyn Boulevard and County Road 109/85th Avenue. It is part of a traffic switch for the Highway 169 Triangle project. During the closure, motorists will detour on Highway 169, Brooklyn Boulevard and Jefferson Highway. Traffic will remain reduced to a single lane in each direction until completion of the new eastbound lanes next spring. When the roadway reopens late in the afternoon, traffic will be on the new alignment of County Road 81.

An open house is set for noon to 3 p.m. on tomorrow at the West Metro Fire Rescue District's Station 3 in New Hope. Activities include fire truck rides and demonstrations.
