-=Tribute=-
This was a solo, composed by Jeff Queen, and performed by me, Corey Roberts. This was at the Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest 2008, at Texas State University. Occurred Monday, May 26th, 2008.

This solo was pretty difficult to play, and you'll notice that I do mess up on certain areas...I was a bit nervous and my left hand wasn't working with me on this day. At least I didn't drop a stick though!

Anyway, I made a 1 and made the Outstanding Performer award for the third time on snare, and I'm very proud of that award. Although, I do feel like I could've played a LOT better. :|

Just as Jeff Queen acknowledged his former instructors and drummers he's met...I'd like to make this a tribute to the culmination of knowledge that I have acquired from various drummers and musicians throughout my high school career. This is for them.

Comments are greatly appreciated!

  • Dang congrats dude!! Ima try this one for state solo and ensemble this year, and I can tell ill prolly have a screwy left hand during performance, just cuz thats how life shafts you sometimes haha, but what can ya do right? Good job again!

  • @monkeyrilla Thanks :) It's a pretty challenging piece! Best of luck to you!

  • What was that left hand doing at 1:29???

  • @sawfish33 It's spazzing out from playing consecutive 16th notes from flams and such.

  • That's cool dude......hey i wanted to do this solo this year....what kind of tips would u recommend?? I think I have the chops for this but this solo looks pretty challenging

  • @kiwilights paradiddles, paradiddlediddles) as well as hybrids (cheeses, invert cheeses, etc). There are a wide variety of tempo markings, time signature changes, and dynamic contrasts; these are all very important to the piece. If I were to establish a goal, it would be to play this as musically as possible, rather than as visually as possible. This video isn't a good representation of the piece, so I'd recommend checking out my other video, i.e. the video with the same name minus State.

  • that snare on the right sounds like a tenor

  • Alright man thanks a lot I'll try this solo out this year and if I do great I'll post it up on YouTube :D Wish me luck ha and Once again congrats on all your success

  • @kiwilights It is a very challenging solo. In terms of this piece, some tips I would recommend is to play it VERY slowly at first. Don't attempt to play it up to tempo initially; it is very difficult and you won't grasp the musical foundation of the piece. There are visuals included in the piece; remove them first. The success rate of this piece depends on how well you can interpret the rhythms, rather than the visual aspect. Practice some standard rudiments (flams, accent grids,

  • @kiwilights Thanks man! It wasn't my best rep of the solo; I had another one that I posted that's better (with the exception of a stick drop). I went to Smithville HS in Smithville, TX, although I kind of taught myself. The percussion program isn't as emphasized as other programs, and I wanted to better myself. So, that's what I did.
