@hipstermi- Lincoln was a republican. He was the 2nd republican nominee for the presidency and the first to win the presidency. He was a member of the whig party while he was in Illinois, but by 1856 the party was pretty much defunct. Lincoln actually quit politics for a while during the time that the whig party was having problems, and later joined the republican party. Lincoln was very much a republican during his entire presidency and for at least 2 years prior to gaining office.
