If I remember correctly they owned up to actually reviewing the Atari 800 XL version of the game with assurances from US Gold that the games were pretty much identical.

Turns out they were.

This were just how games we're - learning pattens, learning jumps, etc. It's nothing to do with your skill or how the game was written, that's just how gaming was back then! After all in three goes you basically went from 3,000 to 6,000 to 9,000 and from dying straight away to almost completing the level! This is how games "drew you in"!
