You don't have to say USB every time. Just press menu, select source, USB

I hardly ever use the voice commands anymore

it would get quite annoying having to listen to the car say "USB, please say your command" everytime you want to do something...

This is the 2008, version of SYNC. Things have changed a lot since then. Most of the kinks have been worked out. I have an 09 Ford Fusion with Sync 2.0. I also have a Zune and the majority of my songs have been purchased online or ripped from CD's.
