Mexican Bull Run

In Mexico people are running from the bulls. Thousands of spectators come to see this dangerous traditional event. Luckily this year fewer people were injured than last year. Let's take a look.

STORY:
Limbs and even lives are on the line in Mexico's traditional Huamantla bull run. The 24 animals raging through the town's packed streets this year were in no mood for mercy. At least 19 people have been injured, two of them seriously. The victims include a Red Cross paramedic gored in the head by a bull that had to be shot by police.

Organizers say injuries are par for the course.

[Alejandro Aguilar, Organizing Committee Spokesman]:
"It's a traditional event. You could say it comes from Spanish influences but it takes place here and it goes well. There are always injuries, there always will be."

With 500 emergency personnel and 20 ambulances drafted in for the big day officials were taking no chances.

Tourists among the spectators were taking a philosophical view.

[Marcus Weck, German Tourist]:
"I thought it is not so dangerous. I saw an accident but also the guys had a lot of fun to fight with the bulls and so it was really interesting for me."

By Huamantla's standards this year's casualty figure is a big improvement. Last year 23 people were injured and one man died.

You're either being taunted and stabbed to death but hundreds of people, or stuck in a 8ft pen your whole life. But I already know theres no real point in anything we do any more. it's all part of the tradition. just like San Fermin. the bulls that are killed are butchered and given to the poor. Traditionally.

What's better? to be a bull killed in a festival like this? or cattle being rounded up in a pen, living your whole life for meat within a fenced area. If I were a bull, this is how I'd want to go. What's the point of most anything we do now?
