You're probably just a bit young to remember them?

Perhaps on a couple of 2' cane lines, but not on any 3'-6" that I know. However a similar thing was used on New Zealand 3'6" railways.

These couplings were commonly used on the 3'-6" gauge lines of Australia.
Known down here as 'meat choppers'....does that answer your question? };-)

These are the old style buffers with a kidney link coupler and yes you did have to watch your fingers and also be prepared to jump clear if the angles were wrong and the buffers rode around each other. very dangerous operation. We also used kidney links when coupling locos together before the alliance auto coupler became standard fittings.
