Speciation is the evolutionary process by which new biological species arise. The biologist Orator F. Cook seems to have been the first to coin the term 'speciation' for the splitting of lineages or 'cladogenesis,' as opposed to 'anagenesis' or 'phyletic evolution' occurring within lineages.

Whether genetic drift is a minor or major contributor to speciation is the subject of much ongoing discussion. There are four geographic modes of speciation in nature, based on the extent to which speciating populations are geographically isolated from one another: allopatric, peripatric, parapatric, and sympatric. Speciation may also be induced artificially, through animal husbandry or laboratory experiments. Observed examples of each kind of speciation are provided throughout.

Natural speciation: All forms of natural speciation have taken place over the course of evolution, though it still remains a subject of debate as to the relative importance of each mechanism in driving biodiversity.

It's all too easy to forget the stakes when the best that religion has to offer is Ray Comfort and William Lane Craig. But we musn't forget that religion is still a dangerous force, no matter how amusing its representatives may be.

As a Christian who believes in evolution, I understand why Christians don't want to believe in it. Lots of people like Huxley, Dawkins, et cetera try to fundamentally associate the philosophical tenants of materialism (we are just animals, science shows God doesn't exist, et cetera) with evolution. People like Ray Comfort are just taking their rejection of materialism out on the scientific theory rather than the actual philosophy. A mistake, but (from my perspective) an understandable one.
