[Nick stopped in his tracks when he saw Sheryll and Sam lying on the floor, their bodies twisted in odd angles. He watched as his brothers' tear-stained faces went nearer to the ones they loved. Nick couldn't look away but he managed to pull his cell phone out of his pocket and call for help]
NICK: 9-911. There was c-car accident. Here on Broadview. N-near the stores...Ok. We'll wait.
[Still not looking away from the scene in front of him, he put his cell phone back in his pocket. He was glad when the tears finally blocked his view]
[Joe couldn't believe what he had seen. The car had tried to turn around but instead its side hit Sam and Sheryll. The thud echoed in his head. His thoughts were only on Sheryll. She lay on the ground and he could see that her head was bleeding and her left arm and leg were bent all wrong]
JOE: [Whispering] Sheryll!
[He didn't want to touch her—she looked so fragile—but he couldn't help getting closer. He used his sleeve to remove the tears from his eyes. He didn't want to take his eyes off her for a second. Joe bent down on his knees and touched the arm that didn't look broken. Sheryll's soft skin was covered in blood and gravel. Tears started to stream down again as he looked at the engagement ring he had given her. Joe roughly wiped at the wetness on his cheeks]
JOE: Sheryll! Please wake up.
[Kevin pushed his legs faster as he hurried to get to Sam's side. It didn't look like she was breathing. Blood stained her shirt, arms and face where she had gotten a cut from the impact of the car and the ground]
KEVIN: Sam! Sam, can you hear me?
SAM: Kevin, I'm sorry.
KEVIN: Sam.
[He wanted to pick her up and hold her close to him, but she looked so... broken. Kevin could see from the corner of his eye that Joe seemed close to hysterics. Kevin let the tears fall as he stared at Sam's unmoving face; Joe's sobs were the only thing he could hear. Even when the ambulances came, Joe's cries were the only thing that stood out. Kevin didn't fight back when the medics tried to pull him off Sam. He only watched on thinking this was a bad dream that he was going to wake up from. Yeah, that's it, Kevin thought, I'm probably still at home sleeping]
NICK: Kevin, give me the keys. Come on man. We have to get to the hospital.
[Nick lightly shook Kevin. He came to his senses enough to hand Nick the keys and notice that the ambulances were driving away. But after that, his eyes reflected the emptiness he felt inside]
[Kevin and Joe were vaguely aware of waking into the hospital. Nick led his brothers to the waiting room in front of the ER. Kevin sat quietly staring at the floor while Joe paced in front of them. He got more and more frustrated with every step. Nick watched as the doctors went in and out of the ER]
MRS JONAS: Boys!
[Nick and Joe looked up to see their parents running towards them. She hugged them both and cried. She had seen the expressions on them and knew things weren't in good condition]
MR JONAS: How are they doing?
NICK: We don't know. None of the doctors have come out to talk to us.
MRS JONAS: Kevin. Oh Kevin.
[She ran over to him and hugged him tight. He looked like he was in the worse condition. The pain he was holding inside wasn't for the lose of one life, but two]
MR JONAS: How did this happen?
JOE: Sam and Sheryll...were hit by a car.
MR JONAS: Where's the driver of the car?
JOE: Gone. Didn't stop.
[More tears poured out of Joe's eyes]
MRS JONAS: Where the hell is the doctor!
[Mrs. Jonas looked around but none were in sight. They fell into an unease silence. The minutes ticked by and all they could do was wait. 3 hours had passed by when a doctor came up to them]
DOCTOR: Are you the parents of Sheryll and Sam?
MR JONAS: Our sons are engaged to them.
[The doctor nodded]
DOCTOR: I am Dr. Thomas Parkin. I oversaw the surgery on both girls. Sheryll has a broken are and leg, but we were able to repair the major injuries.
MRS JONAS: Which were?
DOCTOR: 2 of her ribs were broken and one of her lungs was damaged.
JOE: She's going to be ok, right?
DOCTOR: Yes, all her injuries will heal with time. She's sleeping right now and will need lots of rest.
[Joe was able to relax a bit, but he wouldn't be able to calm down until he hears her voice]
KEVIN: What about Sam?
[Kevin hadn't spoken since he was sitting next to Sam's body on the street. Joe and Nick glanced at him nervously]
DOCTOR: [Sighing] Sam suffered more injuries since it seems she took more of the impact.
[Kevin held his breath as he waited for the news]
DOCTOR: Sam's had a concussion. The impact put a crack on her skull and both her legs were broken. Her lungs gave out for a few moments and we had to restart her heart also.
KEVIN: But she's alive, right?
DOCTOR: She will live.
[They all heard the emphasize Dr. Parkin had put on the word she]
KEVIN: The baby?
DOCTOR: [Shaking his head] I'm sorry. There was nothing we could do.
i told you the baby would die. it's not fair. it died before it lived. i'm crying a lot now. i can't help it. i am a very emotional person.
