Part two of my tribute to the greatnes of retro glory.

The C64 was the most popular and best selling 8-bit home gaming computer for around ten years. It was known for two things:
1 - Its huge library of cheap (most games were £2.99!) original games and arcade/cross platform converions.
2 - Its revolutionary SID sound chip which gave the distinctive "C64 sound."

In the same way that the NES sounded totally different to the Sega Master System, the C64 sounded unlike anything else - and was technically superior (musically) to the 8-bit consoles which came later.

Here are a few examples of my favourite Commodore 64 music, by some of the master C64 composers!

  • to comment "oh the game is rubbish" you obviously never programmed the machine. WTF.. Mark Kelly, the guy who coded it did a fair few decent games inc. turbo outrun. The machine has limits.. then to say the commando theme is great? sure.. BUT that ate all the memory so the game only has 3 levels!!!..

  • Yeah, but I'm simply talking about music in this video. It's a music tribute. Obviously I never programmed the C64 (I couldn't program my way out of a paper bag). The Commando music eating all the memory leaving only three levels is, I think, the fault of the programmers. Look at Last Ninja 2:AMAZING jusic on every stage, and lots of different stages.

  • I guess it depends on how good a programming team there is, and how they work their magic to overcome limitations in the hardware (Like Treasure making the Sega Megadrive do SNES-like scaling, rotation etc that it should not physically have been able to do)

In any case, I think we can agree that the C64 was a musical god tier machine which deserves to be remembered always.

  • very nicely made tribute. what software do you use? I guess something little more advanced than windows movie maker :)

  • Sony Vegas. A beautiful piece of quite user-friendly software.

I use Movie Maker to get the final file down to Youtube size though.

  • Islandrocks is the shit! I love his tribute!

  • The c64 commando music is pure win.

On the pc it was pure 1-sound-channel-of-beep fail!

To this day I'm still bitter that my first computer was a pc xt instead of a c64.

  • I remember ordering this game for my C64 & being so disappointed. I was waiting for hours of fun playing together with my brother. As soon as it arrives, plug it in, music build up was awesome, and the I find out you can only play single player, and the graphics where horrible.

  • I remember playing it , back in 1990, so that was not long ago.

  • YOU MADE ME FEEL SOOOO OLD!

  • Golden Axe turns 20 this year, I think. :3

  • thanx!
