2008 (18 years old)

This is Part one of my two part video which will show me covering every Bassline from Jamiroquai's first album; Emergency on planet Earth (which featured Stuart Zender on Bass).

The tracks that will appear in part one are;

1. When you gonna learn
2. Too young to die
3. Hooked up
4. If i like it i just do it
5. Music of the mind

Stuart Zender played the bass-lines on all these tracks except "when you gonna learn" which was played by Andrew Levy (who is also the bassist for the Brand New Heavies).

The main members of the band for this album (and composers) were as follows;

Jay Kay - Vocals
Toby Smith - Keys
Stuart Zender - Bass
Nick Van Gelder - Drums
Wallis Buchanan - Didgeridoo

The gear i used in this video:

Bass - Squire 5 string precision bass (with jazz pickups)

Tascam bass trainer (for recording the audio and removing most of Stu's bass part so i could redo it)

Audacity - Free recording software

And my song digital camera for the video. It works pretty well!!

I didn't learn the bass-lines from tab, it is all done by ear (which explains why some of it is messy) so please don't ask me to write you out the tabs. Do it the hard way!! lol

  • Did you mod that bass in any way?

  • @phatcurtis - Hey. This bass is mod free in every way. Think I've replaced a machine head at some point but that's about it!

  • Man - you are a funk MACHINE! Got your Stu Zender down to a T, with impeccable timing, and a great tone. Not surprised to read that you're keeping busy. Work has a way of finding bass players, especially ones as competent as you. Thanks for sharing. Groove on brother!

  • @BlimpyBoy - Cheers buddy, glad you liked 'em... Seems so long ago now I did these videos!

    I like the stuff you've put up. You checked out Sol Philcox? He does some serious chicken pickin'

  • @jejgalvin Thanks. I've only been exploring country & bluegrass guitar for a couple of years now - and it looks as though it will easily consume what's left of my life. In a good way. Checked out Sol. Little bugger can pick! Also saw some of your more recent vids - really dig your affinity for Squiers (pun intended)! What do you call the group from the Chameleon video?

  • @BlimpyBoy - haha here here, our passions will stay with us til the end! Yeah Sol is cool, he made the move to Nashiville recently which is pretty inspiring, I'd love to get across the pond or atleast to London! The Squires are great, I'm playing an 80's model at the mo and their build quality at the time rivals that of a Fender today!

    The group in the Chameleon is called Freshly Squeezed. I was just filling their bass players shoes for the night.

    Do you play Bass yourself?

  • I have this bass I love all the nobs cranked (: Good bass

  • BREAK THE G FORCE

  • man, are you a star music? because you speak like a star, cammon men cammon...

  • what would be great is for someone to get the squarepusher liunes on here. check out ez boogie by squarepusher for great bass . some of the synth sounds are quite deceptive and the double tracked clean bass works well.

  • good stuff here. i ought top get some vids on here. zender was where i started too. have you gotten into wooten, jaco pastorius, jeff berlin and pallandino, mark king and of course jamerson. headhunters god make me funky. hope this doesnt sound patronising. its not. you got flare your playing.

  • @jejgalvin The jazz-bass was my main instrument for close to 7 years, and I still sit in regularly. I'm doing the music-school thing later this year, and I didn't want to enrol on bass. That role is in such high demand that it's easy to find yourself so busy with other people's projects that you're not really doing your own thing. I still maintain my calluses though :)
