I purchased a set of Zhangbucker P90's (the Honk Plus set) from David Plummer (AKA Zhangliqun @ the Seymour Duncan User Group Forum) @ zhangbucker@yahoo.com . I wanted to highlight these pickups in an SG through a Vox AC30 CC with Alnico Blue speakers. The guitars are going straight into the amp into the Top Boost Channel without use of the channel blending capability engaged and the channel voicing is set to the standard "old school" VOX AC30 setting. The bass is turned off, the treble is a little less than a quarter of the way up and the gain is a little better than three quarters of the way up. The Honk Plus pickups are true P90's wound to 10.3K with alnico 5 magnets in 42awg wire (bridge) and a 7.2K 42awg wire with alnico 2 magnets in custom sizes. I am comparing the tone to my Les Paul Special Double Cutaway P90 guitar with stock pickups. The bridge P90 measures 8.05K and the neck is 7.9K, both containing alnico 5 magnets. The Honk Plus bridge is one of the hottest pickups hands down I have ever played but very "vintage warm" at the same time. Its got lots of harmonic zing in overdriven chords and nice "P90" honky singe notes. Take a listen and see what you think. Excuse the sloppy playing-I was just messing around. I highly recommend you talk to David Plummer @ zhangbucker@yahoo.com . He did me a great service pointing me in the right direction to get the tone in my head. I have never been as happy with my tone as I am today and I credit a great deal of that to Dave's help. P.S. I made a mistake when describing the amp in the video-the volume is a little better than a quarter of the way up not three quarters of the way up.

  • I know I'm comparing the bridge and neck, apples and oranges I know, but I swear that alnico 2 kills the alnico 5 in complexity.

The alnico 2 has more depth, character and sounds spongier.

  • Hey "spentonmediocrrity". I would definatly say that the A2 is a warmer "woodier" type of tone while the A5 is a bit more scooped but definatly more top end. I think we all hear things a little differently and have different ways of describing tonal characteristics. Because of that, its nice to have these videos so that each can hear the tones instead of having to interpret them. Hope you liked the clip :)

  • I think they sound a bit muddy on higher gain settings, but hot damn they sound great clean.

  • Hey TooAbsurd-thanks for the comment! I want to make a bit of a qualification on the recording and let you know that the mic was just my Mac Book and it was definatly clipping. The amp was on like a 1/4 of the volume and the treble was on a 1/4 and bass was off. A bit more clarity could have been had by turning the treble up a bit. I still think they are great pickups and have no plans to ever change them. Thanks again :) !

  • i love the sg

  • Thanks!! I do as well :)

  • With the type of music you're playing with the example, humbuckers would've sounded better in both circumstances.P90's sound best through a semi hollowbody and jazz or blues.

  • I like the second guitar/pickup tone....it seems to have both a broader response and more meat...sounds more balanced. It also seems to have less icepick than the stock Gibson pickups.

I'm looking into Zhanbuckers so thanks for the demo..

  • Gibson SG's are 1 of my fav Guitars, tho I prefer the older models like the 1966 model. Still that guitar would be sweet to own! =]

  • All one really needs are Telecaster (no fancy EMG stuff) and SG with a couple of P90s. I am not sure about the AC30, i'd rather go for JMP50. I had one, but it got electricuted, along with '72 tele.

  • Great! Nice to see what the SG sounds like with P90s. I prefer humbuckers in an sg, but p90s in a les paul.

  • hey dude, from TW?

  • gmlasam you need to watch more of the vid before leaving a comment.

Thanks for this vid. This is the exact guitar/amp combo I have been thinking of getting, but it's hard to demo it at a decent volume in a shop. I'm sold now.

Anyone need a SF Vibrolux?? LOL

  • The title of this video is misleading. That guitar is not a an SG is a Les Paul double cut away.
