Andrew Salomone uses a hacked knitting machine from the 80s to "print" digital images into knitted garments. At World Maker Faire New York 2011, Andrew demonstrates the knitting machine and shows off its creations including a sweater with Bill Cosby's face.

This machine reads some sort of file format though. It can't deal with bitmaps, but he has a way of converting bitmaps into something this machine can deal with. I still contend that it isn't a "hack," just as you wouldn't call converting a FLAC file into something iTunes could play a "hack."

I don't think they originally talked to a PC - I think you had to key in the patterns by hand or off a card.

This is fantastic! And I am jealous. Two years ago I was thinking it would be amazing if I could make a sweater with Cosby's face on it for our holiday party. Knowing I couldn't knit one myself it was more of a fantasy. You are my hero today.

Is this really a hack? Weren't these machines meant to operate this way? It would be a hack if, say, you turned the thing into some sort of knitting machine synthesizer and then you became like a yarn-based Dan Deacon.
