Here's Larry singing "Herzelein" in Kaiserslaughtern, Germany on November 4, 2006. It's Karaoke night at a nice McDonald's done up like a nightclub.
One night in 2005, Larry forgot his air-force base ID and had to wait at McDonald's while his nephew Bradley went on base to conduct some business. The McDonald's had karaoke that night with a disco ball, spotlighting, and night club ambiance. It was a packed crowd with an M/C that guided the proceedings, including organizing some group dance numbers and egging on the kids. It was great fun. The most popular song of the night was "Herzelein," which is a song about staying out too late at night drinking wine and making the wife wait for you to get home. During the chorous the entire crowd linked arms and swayed to the music and sang along.
Larry got the name of the song from the DJ and Brad's domestic helper, Ute, was able to get a transcription, translation, and CD recording from her son. Larry worked the song up while back home and then the next year during his visit to Germany made it a goal to drop by and perform the song.
After a visit to the nearby Walkplatz (outdoor shopping mall), Larry started the car and headed out toward the McDonald's. Then that *#$&*&#*&$ GPS system blinked out and, once again, got Larry lost. Luckily Larry had a cell phone and Bradley was able to give enough directions so that Larry just made it before closing time.
Unfortunately it was not a packed house, and in the intervening year "Herzelein" had seemed to drop completely out of sight and no one, including the DJ, had ever heard of it. But Larry found it in the book, the song was queued up, and this is the exciting result!
Enjoy and please leave your comments! Thanks for dropping by!
