How do I access full-text articles with the proxy bookmarklet?
Has this ever happened to you?
You're doing research off-campus, say, at home or at a coffee shop, and you find a really good article that you want to read. But when you go to get the full text of the article, the site asks you to pay for it. You know that your affiliation with the UW Libraries gives you access to the article, but you don't want to backtrack all the way to the Libraries homepage just to click the off-campus access link and then find the article again.
There is an easy fix for this. The UW Libraries has created a proxy bookmarklet that you install in your web browser. Basically, it's a button that gives you instant access to all of the UW Libraries resources. Rather than backtracking to login off-campus from the homepage, this button allows you to login instantly, and it returns you to the Web site you were on.
To install the bookmarklet, start at the UW Libraries homepage www.lib.washington.edu. Next, click on the link labeled "Off-Campus Access Tools."
If you use Internet Explorer, right click the link and add it to your favorites. Click yes on the security question, add the bookmarklet and now you can easily use the bookmarklet by clicking on "Favorites" and selecting the bookmarklet.
If you use Firefox or Safari, simply click and hold down the left mouse button on the link and drag it to your bookmark toolbar. It's as easy as that. Now you can click on the button anytime to get full text articles.
As always, if you have questions about the bookmarklet, or the UW Libraries in general, click the Ask Us! link on any Libraries Web page.
