How Dare you insult Semper Oper! Just kidding, I thought it was a little odd too! The Liu in the production sang like a black opera singer, which ticked me off even more:-( I think Puccini cried a little at that one. You are exactly right, to have a beautiful set would have been wonderful.... I think they may have had budget issues. Do you have video of Hamburg?

Carl Tanner is really a great Tenor! But Dresden should reconsider the poor staging, which does not embrace Turandot, Puccini, the artists and the opera as such a beautiful place itself. Hamburg's Calaf version (in means of costume) was much, much, much better! ;-)

Regietheatre can sometimes be effective in concentrating more on the voices and Tanner does sound wonderful here (hope he has a good, steady coach to help him preserve his voice) but often I find these productions do not work dramatically and give the impression that the main concerns was the budget and the bottom line.

stupidity!

too bad that is Turandot and not Liu...which makes it even worse.

Probably an idiotic director's idea to have a disapproving Liu in the scene. What stupidity!

La voce di questo tenore è molto vigorosa,ma la sua tecnica è quella del dilettante allo sbaraglio.

Great tenor!!!

I should say that he is far better in Calaf than Manrico. I just watched Il Trovatore in whole, and I am sorry to say that he was not as good in that role The famous Di quella pira...was disapponting for me.Among others.

Great voice!
What is the soprano doing wandering around the stage during nessun dorma?? The question mark?????????????? And who was the inept person who made such a terrible video. All that being said, Carl Tanner sounds terrific in this aria.

haha it was my friend, he didn't want to get caught taping the opera. The question mark was a symbolic thing, like the 3 riddles were symbolized by 3 TV's with question marks. At this point Turandot had to guess Calaf's real name so it was symbolized by a large question mark in the middle of the stage. It was weird, but europeans love new age productions from what I hear.
