I hooked the IC-7400 up to a 1/2 wave CB pole (1/4 wave 20m) and scanned through 20m and found quite a lot of strong stations. I was using a battery to power the radio but it went flat (forgot to charge) and so I had to use the noisy CB PSU.

  • Nice video!

    Some nice strong signals there.

Where did you get your mast?

  • Thanks, yep the prop was amazing that day :)

It's just a generic half-wave CB pole - use it portable since its so small and light, and great on 10, 15 and 20 metres :)

  • i am getting the ic-r3 scanner by icom is it any good

  • its a very good scanner but on HF it is pretty dead. To listen to HF you really need a dedicated box if possible. Plus it only demodulates AM and FM modes, so it'll be useless on many Ham bands. But I've used one and was pretty impressed with it. I'd go with the IC-R20 - the TV monitor is a gimmick if you don't absolutely need it and the R20 is much more sensitive.

  • Good but not the best. The AM filters on the Pro III are fixed at 3, 6 & 9 khz. Variable DSP filtering only works on SSB, RTTY and CW, good for ssb/utility not so for Radio Havana Cuba! Look at the IC 7200, it uses the same Blackfin DSP as the IC 7000 and is half the price of the 756, which is old tech now. AM filtering on the 7200 is variable DSP. If you need the band scope and all the bells and whistles of the 756 better to buy a new IC 7600, the 756s replacement.

  • How is the IC-756Pro3 considered as an SWL receiver?

  • You only need a few amps for receiving :P

And I can only put out 10W anyway lol.

    I was using a 32Ah battery, rechargeable lead-acid type.
