My dad's home computer, in nearly daily use since he bought it new in 1999 at PC Richard's. Here are the original specs: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&do...
I upgraded it with an extra 128 MB of RAM (for a total of 192 MB) and a Zip drive, but otherwise the hardware is pretty much original. It has been absolutely 100% reliable and is even still running the original Compaq OEM installation of Windows 98 (first edition) and Office 97. He has a current computer at work, but at home this Compaq still does what he needs it to do. It has outlasted three HP color inkjet printers and now for the time being is paired with a trusty old HP LaserJet 4L.

  • How do you reformat the drives on these old PCs? FDisk doesn't let me reformat. I have an old Compaq Presario 5140 with a copy of Windows ME that's filled with viruses and corrupted beyond hope. I tried to install Windows 2000, but now I have Windows ME and Windows 2000 and any time I try to run anything on either OS it starts making the loading noise permanently and slows way down, takes up 100% of the CPU even after things are loaded. Basically I want to wipe the drive clean.

  • @PompousPreacher FDISK does work. There are web sites where you can download a Windows 98 boot disk with FDISK and FORMAT on it. Make sure you answer "yes" when FDISK asks if you want to enable large drive (FAT32) support.

  • What manufacturer of HDD is in this guy? I could tell a 4GB, but who's the maker? We have a 1997 WDC Caviar still going in perfect condition with no bad sectors, only WDC that I've ever had work well lol.

  • @KingMacintosh The hard drive is a Seagate.

  • @vwestlife Cool, I was going to guess that but I don't know too many 90s HDDs. I love Seagate. Certainly a good one at 10 years in this video. That comp still work today?

  • @KingMacintosh Yes.
