@ThePGeraFuckingSucks; Actually, you are wrong there. I am two years your senior and remember Elmo debuting in the early 80's. But before he ever had a speaking role, he was in background skits. Before being done by Kevin Clash, Richard Hunt originally performed Elmo until Hunt gave up on making any use out of the character.
