Listen to the P5 play 'Are "Friends" Electric?' from a low price re-issue of Tubeway Army's Replicas LP from 1979. This is in honour of Gary Numan's recent gig at the Brighton Dome, where he performed his LP "The Pleasure Principle". I also saw last year's Replicas Tour. Hope you enjoy!

PS Watch this for the best live version (IMHO) from Teletour 1980 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO1QCYFR9Qc&feature=video_response

  • My mistake, Gary Numan actually does the original version of this song.

  • This is the Original. Gary Numan called himself and his backing group Tubeway Army for his first 2 albums before "going solo" for the next LP "The Pleasure Principle." So that is actually Numan you hear on vocals in this video!

  • Hey Mark, what kind of cartridge are you using? I remember you used to have an blue ortofon. Is this one much better?

  • This is a Goldring 1042 - yes it is in another league from the 2M Blue, but also I have upgraded the phono stage from the amp's own one to a Creek OB H 15. This is not exactly audiophilia but is definitely a step in the right direction. It does actually amplify the sound to line level, unlike the amp, and is detailed. It's EQ is fairly flat, but the cart has a very smooth treble, so they combine to make a mellow sounding balance that still has some heft, esp with vol up high!

  • Thanks for the response. I'm looking forward to buy a new cartridge for my turntable. I still have the original one that came with it which is the M2 red. I was thinking about getting a Benz like my friend did but I'm still shopping around. i think yours it a bit to pricey for me though. Did you install it yourself? It looks like it needs to be very precisely adjusted.

  • I thought Benz were expensive MC's? Am I wrong here?

  • suuuuuuuuuuuuuperd quality..i know this song very well...not a spec of harshenss here dude

  • these goldrings rock big time...i've had 100's of cartridges in me time...including linn arkiv--going to order one for me gyro sme seris v

  • @G1DRP I didn't compress the audio at all when I transferred it. My first few YT uploads were compressed to about 160kbps but I changed to AIFF because YT audio quality was so bad. It has improved slightly since then, but I still believe that compression of an already compressed file is not too good an idea! I think, as far as telling the difference is concerned, it depends on whether the equipment you use is capable of revealing it! Your 40-odd year old ears are still quite capable!

  • Unreal! I wondered where I had heard this song before until I was going through my 7" collection. Jack White's new project (The Dead Weather) do a cover of this exact song on the flip side of the "hang You From The Heavens" 7" Thanks for sharing this. Really fantastic hearing the original. The cover can be found on Youtube as well in case anyone was wondering or wanted to take a listen

  • No you are right. I think yours is sold around 250$ US. I bit expensive for me. My friend got a 600$ cartridge but his turntable is a very good one. I don't have that much money to put on a cartridge. 200$ is the max I wanna pay.
