Tourneys often use the word "pools" to denote matches that are before round of 16, quater-finals, semis, and finals.

no... actually this competition was a knockout competition. You draw your fights each day and if you lose you go home. If you keep winning, you make it to the quarter/semi/finals.
i used the word "heat" to describe the fights that were not quarter/semi/final fights... is there a better word?

the preliminary rounds of a competition. Winners in the heats get to fight in the finals.
