Was not a loos of engine, it was the counter-rotating props going into a "flat pitch" due to a failure of the rear prop's govenor, Hughes also thought he lost the engine, but the excessive drag of the prop was the proximal cause of the crash.

i know that, but why didn't he just shut down the whole engine, or would that just cause more drag, (PS: i know this is just a movie)

That's just 100% REAL aviator-talk. And it IS true. The L rear prop went runaway-wild on him and he couldn't just shut down the #2 engine's rear prop... so he couldn't feather it and #2 engine just turned into PURE DRAG in SECONDS.... CRASH!
