Spiritual teachings describe ego and Authentic Self, but what determines who we are? We are, in effect, what we choose to act on. On a meditation retreat near Barcelona, Spain, Andrew Cohen, founder of Evolutionary Enlightenment, isolates that part of ourselves that we are not usually conscious of—the choosing faculty. Understanding the significance of this aspect of self is what enables us to take control over our baser emotions and egoic motives and, more importantly, to actually engage in the evolution of consciousness itself.

it´s interesting that ego-people can speak about enlightment. it´s like swimming through the ocean without being in water, as the great zen-master dogen zenji puts it in the "shobogenzo". i don´t get andrew cohen - what´s the sense of sticking to labeld words like ego, self and enlightment? and above all - why allways this negative speaking about the ego. youu have it, otherwise you could´nt speak about it...just observe and be what you are...
This teaching is not correct. The ego is the primal self, part of all. Through the faculties of the body, consciousness is expanded. The choice, which is the discipline, will free the soul from smallness. The ego will always be a part of the smallness or largeness. Choice is important within consciousness. It is all about choice but the ego is always a part of it.
you are clear in your awareness of this observation. as Tolle says you cannot get rid of your ego , so don't even try. be aware that it is the primal self and the tool of inlightenment as you have nothing else to process with, even in the "now" and in choice. Namaste
He didn't say get rid, he's saying transcend the ego. The ego is a closed loop, more of a mask. This is my opinion of course, I don't waste time with right or wrong. Map is not the territory. Namaste
It is not that you don't follow your feelings. Actually when you see that when you follow what the Ego wants you to do, you end up with pain in one form or another. The authentic self gives you internal peace.

Authentic/higher self is a manifestation of God who knows who and were he is. He is everything and he knows it.
they are both characters but one is separate and the other is unity.
the authentic self is how we act as a manifestation of unity/god.
there is a huge difference.
