The function is that with it's shape and how it leads airflow into the engine produces less drag on the car compared to more conventional front end designs in it's class. Mazda designed it that way for a reason, not just for the sake of it. Are you an aerodynamics engineer by any chance? Maybe you know something I don't and could enlighten me since you say it's pointless.

To everyone complaining about the "smiley" front end, just stop and think as to why Mazda did that. It does have a purpose and it's there for allowing less drag as well as feedng more air into the engine. Function over form I always say. And if it really bothers you, get the car in black. I doubt you'll notice the smile since the grille as well as the rest of the car will be the same color.

i really do like the new rx8, mazda6, cx7, cx9. and i ve been waiting like forever to c how would the new mazda3 b like. but m not too impressed. what the heck is with the smiley face, are we already having real cars for babies?? i would rather take the old mazda 3 than taking the new one, cuz its nothing but like G W Bush, always having that stupid smile on his face lol
