Your joking right? 'He' was a conquistador because he was reading the book his wife wrote. He never traveled back in time.

The story goes that the present day Jack found a cure for death like he promised after the death of his wife.

Also remember when he planted that seed on his wife's gave? Well thats the tree he took to the golden nebula so they could both die together but obviously the tree (she) died before they could get there like she died before he found a cure for her cancer.

Sorry for the late reply - Anyway it's very easy. He found a way to time travel of sorts into two eras - the Inquisition and the future by making himself un-aging, not exactly immortal, but he couldn't die normally.

The future version of him has learned a way to send a part of himself back into the past to find more information on the tree, and the future version is the guardian of that tree. He believes that in restoring the tree he will finally join his deceased wife in death.
