Rega P5 Replay: If It Wasn't For The Nights

The purpose of this video replay of If It Wasn't For The Nights is to act as comparison between the old P5/2M Blue and the new P5/Goldring 1042/Creek OBH-15 phono stage combination. Neither of the new components has had long enough to warm up. The Creek especially has been in use for less than an evening. Early signs, are than in combination with the Rega Mira 3 amp and the Rega R3 speakers, it has a real party! I played Terence Trent D'arby and ABBA's Arrival LP, and both had me spell bound. But I think the Creek will mellow out slightly with age. There is a bit of a treble edge, and it has a reputation for being mellow. Oh God, it shows! I am not really sure to tell you the truth, but it has to do with the Goldring. I will have to ring the shop at the weekend. The Creek is not to blame, because it was doing that thru the amp's phono stage. I am hoping it is part of the burn-in process. All the wires are correct, and the stereo check record I have is correct, but there is still this slight bias off centre. Although to be fair the IIWFTN played by 2M Blue is similar, so maybe it's the vinyl after all.

Great sound, and almost if not 100 % similar to the Polar CD version from 80s that I have. But the vinyl is somewhat off center. The main vocals instead of being in center they are a bit on the right, how come?

Astley's 97 CD stereo is slightly different. The strings enter from the centre. The 80's Polydor CD has strings entering slightly left, the record has strings on the right So maybe the Goldring is not to blame.

sounds great, but your right on the treble edge, it gets annoying at parts, but its clear as hell!

The "Bangin' ABBA tune" is much worse for treble edge Owen.

@rulebritannia1991 Actually, this U.K. Epic pressing of ABBA's Voulez-Vouz sounds WAY better than any of the U.S. Atlantic pressings that came out on this side of the pond, And which, for some reason suffer from sucked-out mids, muddy bass and over-attenuated highs.

The original 1992 ABBA Gold isn't compressed for loudness sake, the 1999 and 2008 versions are though.

The ABBA CDs ie Abba Gold etc are all remastered (compressed to hell) to make it loud its completly distroys the dynamic range of the original production wh bdo they seem to always distroy the original recordings in this way !

Part of that is because I used aif for this transfer - as I have done for many months now. But the older version of IIWFTN used AAC about 160 or something. So there is more YT compression. These days I endure much higher file sizes and therefore longer upload times. But that won't affect the general balance. Of course it's nothing like in-room listening, which was phenomenal with 2M Blue and double phenomenal with the 1042 and Creek added to the system!

Mark, this transfer sounds realy great with new phono stage Creek OBH-15. The sound is more deeper in detailes, and its amazing !
