Edit 12th July 2010:
Sorry guys, lost all my data in January. Project is gone. As a result, I have purchased a backup usb storage disk for future projects. I am now working on something else, but hope to return to a 3D board game project at a future date. That will teach me not to make backups!
-----------------------------------------------------
I've noticed sometimes the vid doesn't play in normal quality on here, try high quality if this happens and you have good internet speed.
For those following my game making, the 3D battletech board game is no longer being made for various copyright reasons.
So, I'm going more generic - a 3D customisable tabletop wargame engine.
There will be two programs, a campaign editor for game makers, and a player program, for playing scenarios with people.
Currently game boards are illustrated 28" x 42" with a 1" grid. Playing pieces are cardboard 'stand-ups', a rectangle folded so it stands up on the table, with a unit illustration on both sides. This way anyone can make their own units just by putting a unit illustration on a template jpeg. Make giant mecha, world war riflemen, ancient egyptians, whatever. That's the current plan.
Terrain will be simple 3D models, to look like home made scenery. Make your own factions, weapons, units, etc, to construct your own campaign settings and scenarios, but there will be some limitations on rule design, to make it easier for me to make this program.
Dice rolls determine attack success, with custom modifiers such as long range penalties. Damage can be fixed amount like 5 damage, or from dice rolls, like 1d6 damage.
Currently HotSeat play and LAN play are planned. For internet play, a program such as Hamatchi can let people simulate LAN over the internet to connect.
Have you given up on the project or the how to book? This looked really awesome and im sorry to hear about data lose that really sucks.... How hard is it to make something like this and where should i start learning?
I have some very basic programing skills and i have some 3d modeling skills and i love board games.
Thanks for reading forgive spelling please and please reply soon.

@dashermkii I'm not doing anything with this concept any time soon now. I was using a program called Blitz3D which is a form of Basic that also has commands for using 3d models. Things that would be complicated in other languages have easy to use commands in the Blitz3D language. I sort of taught myself over decades how to program and model stuff, so I'm not really sure where to get started. If you want to know more about Blitz3D, you could try the blitzbasic website

ok, but it is sooo boring to watch. you need to edit it. I get that it's 3D, you don't need to spin the camera around 5 times every time you add something.

Hi! Thanks for watching. Firstly, only 4 full rotations take place over the whole video, not every single time something is added. Secondly, I was just seeing what the things looked like from different angles, and seeing that the shadow/lighting/shading was working. The rest of the time, I'm just moving the camera a bit at a time, to get a better view of what I was doing. Sorry to bore you.

Hi! It's on "pause" at the moment. It's not officially cancelled, perhaps late in the year, or something like that, I might get it done. I've been caught up in some other stuff at the moment and am not currently working on the project, sorry. I'm tempted to write a 'how to' book so people can make things like this themselves if they have the time, software and talent, since I seem to keep getting busy with other things.
