On Dancing with the Stars, Chelsea Kane needed to find her angry side. This was necessary because the dance she was given--the paso doble-- requires aggression, something this Disney star doesn't find comes naturally.
Enter ballroom pro Shirley Ballas, who happens to be Mark Ballas' mom and a fierce ballroom great who knows how to get the job done. During rehearsal, Shirley literally gets into Chelsea's face, letting her know that smiling is not allowed when attempting her given Dancing with the Stars number.
"She was like a scary third grade teacher," Chelsea moaned when speaking about the way this member of the dancing Ballas tribe gets her point across on how to do a mean paso doble.
Still, when it came to performing on Dancing with the Stars last night, Chelsea Kane proved she learned her lesson well. Perhaps too well.
Guest judge Donnie Burns likened her to a "Hell's Angels" instead of a matador (as is the usual character taken on during this dance from Spain), while Len Goodman asserted that Chelsea became a little aggressive, while lacking "refinement".
As if to save this aspiring hoofer, one Dancing with the Stars judge was not as harsh as he was colorful in his criticism. Delivering his verdict in the dramatic fashion he is known for, Bruno Tonioli called Kane a "ballbreaker," remarking that she displayed what could be deemed "violent intensity. It was like a Quentin Tarantino Paso Doble," Bruno proclaimed.
As for Carrie Ann Inaba?
The only female judge was on Chelsea and Mark's side, saying she loved "the creativity" and complimented the pair on the fact that they pushed boundaries with their paso doble.
The resulting scores?
Two 8s from the naysayers (Donnie and Len) and two 9s from her judging fans (Bruno and Carrie Ann). These numbers brought this dancing pair a total of 34 and into the middle of the Dancing with the Stars leaderboard for last night.
