Aspiring scientists from the Zurich School of Applied Sciences have built a video simulation that displays the flight path of every commercial flight in the world over a 24-hour period. There isn't much of an application for it, but it sure is cool to look at.

The scientists used a commercial website called FlightStats to gather global flight and schedule information so there was no need to contact the different airlines.

  • Flights over the poles are used primarily as a backup - for example if there's severe volcanic activity (volcanic ash) there are polar routes that can be used from the us to asia or europe (and vice versa) but the distance will be greater = fuel burn will be higher so it'd be done only if necessary. Possible? Yes. Common? Not so much.

  • No plane flies over the South Pole. Why?

Because there is no point in going all that extra distance. Plus, the hostile terrain ensures that survivors of crashes will die soon and fast and the ozone hole will fry everyone in the planes. Still with me?

Ok, the North Pole actually cuts distance but only if you are going from...say Alaska to Moscow.

I think currently only missiles fly in that route.

The reason why the planes fly in curves in the video is because the world is a sphere.

  • don't seem to fly over poles, but why would they?
