"It's South Africa 1990. Two major events are about to happen: The release of Nelson Mandela and, more importantly, it's Spud Milton's first year at an elite boys only private boarding school. John Milton is a boy from an ordinary background who wins a scholarship to a private school in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Surrounded by boys with nicknames like Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man and Mad Dog, Spud has his hands full trying to adapt to his new home. Along the way Spud takes his first tentative steps along the path to manhood. (The path it seems could be a rather long road). Spud is an only child. He is cursed with parents from well beyond the lunatic fringe and a senile granny. His dad is a fervent anti-communist who is paranoid that the family domestic worker is running a shebeen from her room at the back of the family home. His mom is a free spirit and a teenager's worst nightmare, whether it's shopping for Spud's underwear in the local supermarket..."

  • The movie was good but not great. the book was better.

  • @SideburnsRule841

It would not have been possible to bring all of the book to the screen, with all the most loveable details and stuff in it. So the filmmakers had to make some comrpomises, I guess. But it's good to know that you also liked the movie itself :-)!

  • Why has this not been released in the main actors home country (Australia) yet?

  • @lifesnova

A while ago, Australia finally was indeed the first country outside South Africa where a distributor signed for SPUD - THE MOVIE. I guess that Troye living there indeed had a strong effect on the succesful results of the distribution negotiations.

Well, from signing to the actual release (in theaters and / or DVD etc.), there will always be many months passing by, still, to prepare the marketing campaign etc. But: The first step for Australia has been made!

  • @lifesnova cause illegally downloading it is much easier :p

  • @gofuck4

It's also "much easier" that way, to harm the movie industry by them making less and less money from their films due to illegal sharing and downloading. When exactly did the principle of "Give and Take" change to "Give and Get Nothing in Return", and how exactly does this economical principle keep both parties involved alive?

  • Sorry - Didn't like it . Typical screenplay . Nothing like the book . ( He wasn't such an outcast in the book . ) Needed more footage of Eve and Rambo !!!!!

  • loved the book and the movie, shame they couldn't fit everything in.

SPUD has been announced to be released internationally in Australia, Scandinavia and in the UK already (dates to be anounced). They are working on getting distributors of other countries around the world on board, too, but this takes time. Me, I live in Germany, and I have piled up an extra stash of patience for a release in my country, too. But things certainly look good, as SPUD won an award at a festival here earlier this year ... So: Fingers crossed :-)!

  • Was this ever released outside South Africa?

  • @Kashmiran100

Thanks for your comment, and I am glad you like the movie so much. I will still have to wait until a release date has been confirmed for Germany (wehre I live), before I can actually watch the movie, but I know today already that I totally agree with what you said :-)!

  • Spud the film version, is excellent.

    I hope it wins awards.
