can yo please tell me what is the purpose of Vacuum Bagging? Is it to suck the excess resin out of the CF piece?

Hi Disndat11,
There are to reasons to use a vacuum bag when using wet layup.
Pressing the fiber into the core. A 24" vacuum will create about 14 pound per sq. inch pressure on the laminate.
And also the peel ply and bleeder draw off excess resin.
Also the peel ply leaves a "toothed" finish that is ready for bonding.

do you have to leave the vacuum pump running until set?

Yes, I start out at 26" of vacuum until the resin starts to gel then back it off to 18" and let it cure over night. For my bigger projects I will tent the tool and heat it to 140 deg. F which will cause the part to cure more quickly. But only after letting the vacuum draw off all the voids.
