The Glasgow Mela 2009 performance was one which required much preparation in gathering a host of acts ready for a true Urban Asian showcase. Artist preparation was vast in the weeks prior with dance rehearsals including choreography and stage work directed for the huge set itself.

This year proved to be a greater push on all fronts as Gtown Desi opened their collective space for respective dance groups and artists, Real Rhythms, One Blood, Nikitta, Charlene, Miss Elli, Kobi Onyami, and Arora productions. The number was undoubtedly the highest to take stage however all focus was on quality as opposed to quantity.

Bobby B kicked off proceedings and set the tempo with a live DJ mash up throwing all artists into the melting pot including Marvin Gaye, AR Rahman and Hip Hop icon, Jay-Z. The mix being so spontaneous required recording considering the wealth in sound and power in play. Over 40 records were spun in the space of 10 minutes setting up all acts ideally. Needless to say, spectators were ready and raring for the remainder after being set up so effectively.

One Blood firstly set the mark with a dance choreographed by Rudy Rude Boy followed by Miss Elii and Kobi Onyame as they performed their forthcoming track from the album 1134 produced by Gtown Desi.

Charlene then arrived to perform her heartbroken track, Why You Lie with Nikitta then following up with her single, Type of Guy, set to be the 2nd release from 1134. The former X-Factor star was accompanied by Real Rhythms choreographed by Kirsty Woods.

The very 1st release from the debut record, Peer was choreographed by Ron Bedau (Destinys Child, Honey, Step-Up) once again featuring Real Rhythms and One Blood. The Bhangra smash ready to hit TV screens enraptured the entire audience with roars from the crowd in appreciation of the up tempo banger. Camera phones were at pin-point level in capturing the set from start to finish as the decibel levels tore through the atmosphere with people left in awe of a blistering yet mind pumping performance that will be forever in the minds of so many.

It was clear to see how far the collective have came in combining both Urban & Asian elements to such a multi-cultural audience. The entire team for the day delivered on all fronts and once again set the bar to such a level that any other forces may struggle to compete with.

With Peer and 1134 set to drop in shops for late Summer, Glasgow most certainly experienced the most exclusive of live trailers they may ever do so.
