Interesting. I also live in Portland and am considering a move to Chicago. I'm glad you asked the question about living without a car! Great video too!

How necessary is it to have a car in Chicago? Say if I moved there and lived anywhere from the Loop up to Lakeview?

Most people in that area don't have cars and live easily without them. One great thing in the last few years is the easyavailability of rental cars by the hour, etc. ZipCar and similar services.

Thanks. I've been considering moving to Chicago from Portland for grad school and I'm somehow drawn to Chicago because of its urban atmosphere (although I've never been). You can live in Portland without a car, but you're better off having one. Other than New York, would you say Chicago is the best city in America to live without a car?

I've spent a great deal of time in many cities around the country, including some time in Portland.
Chicago is a great city without a car - and you can easily rent one for a short term if you need one. Cabs are pervasive here also - and the fares are low relative to other cities.
I'd rank San Francisco high on the list of car-not-needed cities also.
