Liver of sulphur is basically potassium pyrosulphate. This video shows how to make a substitute for liver of sulphur with sodium hydroxide (commonly known as caustic soda and easily available). The main product will be sodium pyrosulphate, which performs almost as well as the original liver of sulphur. The main idea is to make sulphur dissolve in water (which commonly does not occur because of insolubility issues), that's why it has to be chemically transformed.

  • Very cool, super useful, but "well ventilated" may be an understatement; Hydrogen Sulphide is roughly as toxic as Hydrogen Cyanide. Anybody who tries producing more than a very small quantity of this stuff without the proper lab setup will die. Period.

So saying, I am totally going to go and try this.

  • @MysteryBowl don't forget about the sulphur dioxide, that one gives you more trouble than anything else, especially if you goof it up and set the sulphur in the spoon on fire...cheers;)

  • This is great! Thank you! I've been looking all over to buy LOS but haven't found it in my country and don't really feel like ordering it from abroad. Just one thought though; since LOS is potassium bisulphate, what would happen if one used KOH instead of NaOH? I'm afraid my chemistry is now quite forgotten.

  • @XofHope if you'd use potassium hydroxide instead of sodium hydroxide than you'll get the real liver of sulphur. i used sodium hydroxide because the other one is not available in my country.

  • @metalhead0jtk I did this today and got great results and I answered both my own questions. It is about 50/50 mix and medicinal sulfur works. Thanks again very much!

  • Great video, saves me a lot of time an hassle. Thanks very much.

Two questions: One, what measurements did you use for both chemicals? Looked like about 50/50.

And two, have you used pharmacy grade "flowers of sulfur" to do this? It's been purified with an acid and thus is still on the acid side of the PH scale.

    Thanks very much.

  • good video,i don't like the colour i get with sulphur.I may try it.

I read that you can use photographic developer to blacken silver.

  • @fedaikn Thank you! I'll buy the components soon and try it myself.
