There are 3 species in the lattice model. First is producer (green), second is primary consumer (brown), and the third is secondary consumer (red). For example, the primary consumer (brown) will breed itself and survive if it has food (green) at the same lattice. If no food is available, the primary consumer will die and become the producer (green) at next time step. The same rule applies for the secondary consumer (red) as well while its food is the primary consumer (brown). Have fun!
The total number of red, brown, and green is a constant, which means it is an ideal system of conservation of total particles. The green doesn't move at all, but red and brown can move and when they are out of food, they turn into the green. That explains the pattern of spatial distributions in time. Because the total number is constant, every time the red is increased, the brown is decreased. So on the brown is increased, the green must be decreased and etc. You can define the rules at will.
