Low Income People Crash Lavish Liberal Dinner Party: OCAP Organizes to Raise Welfare/Disability Rates

On Thursday, February 25th, 2010, diners at a lavish Ontario Party Liberal fundraising event, which cost the invited attendees $950 per plate and $9,500 a table, did not finish their meals in comfort. Members of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) organized to crash the fundraiser in an act of outrage at the fact that rich Liberal Party supporters could spend more on a meal than people on welfare and disability have to live on for a month. The reality is that people on social assistance live on incomes that have lost at least 40% of their spending power since 1995. People are even poorer today than they were under Mike Harris.

That is exactly what we were asking, when we crashed their fundraiser- why all those liberal hangers-on don't get off their asses and get real jobs instead of making their exorbitant livings off of further impoverishing the poor of this province!

A common denominator among this group is born into privilege, continue to have privilege, earn nothing. It's not what you know, it's who you know....for the most part. I am sure some did, but can almost promise you...most didn't.

@davisSS396 And furthermore...you think that the elite in Ontario have "earned" their $950 a plate dinner? Is that what you tell yourself when you see your income tax come off each paycheque? Because guess who paid for those plates? You did bud. We all did. NO ONE deserves a $1000 dinner. EVERYONE deserves food, shelter, and security. Worldwide. But this is about what is going on right here and right now. This is shameful. I hope you never have to stand in line at a foodbank.

@davisSS396 Ya, lets tell that to all of the disabled people in Ontario that they should "suck it up" and "just get a job". Right. That absolutely solves the problem. I love how people forget that those on ODSP and OW also pay tax in this country as well...it is called HST on goods and services in Ontario. I am NOT saying that it is ok if you are completely able bodied and capable to work to just sit on OW. But many do not CHOOSE poverty. No one chooses to be disabled.

@videobyOCAP I didn't know working class people exploited the poor, I guess while I was at pizza hut I exploited the poor minority shoving coal into the oven huh? The only people exploited the poor are themselves, I grew up in the scummiest ghettos and now the fam pulls in over a 100k a year. If you keep blaming your laziness on other people who have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU, you're going to get nowhere in life (Just like you're entire family I'm sure.)

Poverty HAS struck the once elite. It happens. And one day, could very well happen to you. The real LOSERS are the ones JUSTIFYING POVERTY IN ONE OF THE RICHEST NATIONS ON EARTH!!!! FOR SHAME!
