  • Bobick did hold a win over Stevenson, I believe in the Pan-Am games the year prior to their Olympic meet.

  • Joe: quit dreaming!

Saw the Coetze Tate fight, thought Coetzze would win. I think it went till the late rounds? After the Ron Lyles, Frazier , Ali, Foremans etc. retired there was no one at the heavies....the mantle of Ali fell squarely on the shoulders of Ray Leonard as the public never accepted Larry Holmes.

Against Holmes, I'd take Stevenson. I think he'd outreach Larry and land that right hand over the top.

Then again, Holmes could take a punch, and when he was hurt,....look out !!

  • @6400az Ironically, 'Big' John Tate destroyed Coetzee when he turned pro after the Olylp...Yet, Stevenson destroyed Tate in the 76 gold medal games... In that era Stevenson would have been a serious contenter as a pro..Larry Holmes was the best at that time, so no doubt they would meet eventually; Either Holmes wins by dec. keeping Stevenson away with a left jab or Stevenson 'catches' Holmes with a right cross and KOs him..Holmes was very ,very tough at that time and hungary

  • @kcatleticos

Gerrie Coetzee, Pierre Coetser and Kaly Knutze !!!..all had similar names. I saw that Spinks Coetzee fight. Really could'nt believe what Coetzee did to him. He then goes up against Mike Weaver, hits him with everything he's got. Weaver barely flinches and KO's him in the 13th?

In 76' Stevenson probably would have won.He was in his prime and Spinks was still too green. I've for one, have never seen such an imposing athlete as Stevenson. Shame his potential was never realized.

Thank God I was able to get out with my family in the freedom flights of the 60's. Cubans on the island do not have free acces to internet/Youtube.

There was ....Kid Chocolate...Jose " Mantequilla" Napoles, Benny Paret ( went to shool with his 2 sons) Also Luis Manuel. Remember he was KO'd by Nino Benvenuti , ealry 70's?

Tyson had an excelent defense, his head bobbing a bit like Fraziers but better.

Stevenson, I would think could go the 12 / 15 rnds. He was in great shape.

  • @6400az You still live in Cuba ? i remember Jose Napoles left Cuba for a better live and had a HOF career.. Most people dont remember that Tyson was a fabulous defensive fighter bobing and weaving and very hard to connect with [pre-Douglas bout]..Stevenson looked like he was in great condition but did he ever go 12 or 15 rds and did he train for that ? Tyson never won a gold medal but got robbed against Tyrell Biggs and Henry Tillman in Olym. trials but that probably made him more determined

  • @kcatleticos

Thank you sir. Always loved sports.Watched the olympics and amateur events ,it's the only time I could see things other than politics coming from my native Cuba.

The Tyson vs. Stevenson bout would hinge on whether Tyson could get inside and unload before Stevenson catches him with his monster right hand.

He did run into trouble with the tall guys, but mostly with guys fought back. Stevenson was KO'd by Visotsky, from waht I hear HE got inside and KO'd him.

  • @6400az i can tell you know your boxing history..How about a young pre1989 Mike Tyson vs. a young 1976 Stevenson ? Tyson was prbably the the most explosive-quickess boxer to come along in decades but he did have problems with tall rangy fighters like Bncrh Smith and Bust. Douglas..This is where Stevenson's chin will be tested and Tyson will go for early KO.,my opinion the the bout turns into brawl and Stevenson will lose by 7th rnd by TKO after being hurt early in the bout......

  • @6400az You make some good points no doubt, but i still think that if they fought in '76' Spinks would have tryed that swarming-brawling style on Stevenson and he [Stevenson] would have caught him with a straight right like the Gerrie Coetzee-Spinks bout, where Spinks was knocked silly

  • @kcatleticos

I know Spinks was'nt the best of Champs. But his style was tailor made to beat the Cuban fighters. They are stylistically perfect and effective AMATEUR fighters. If you keep your distance they'll pick you apart, but get inside and brawl, they're in ineffective.Spinks did just that to Sixto Soria.Stevenson would have had his hands more than full with brawlers/punchers like, Spinks and Shavers. I think he may have had faired better with boxers like Ali, Norton, or Holmes. .

  • @6400az Spinks ? Leon Spinks was a joke and the worse heavyweight champ of all-time in many peoples opinion.. Stevenson would have destroyed him if they fought in 1976 olmp. but Spinks was a light-heavy at that time..Shavers v. Sevenson would have been close , but i give the nod to Stevenson due to staima problems for Shavers..Shavers was barely 6ft had trouble beating tall rangy fighters like Holmes and Ali..Stevons would respect his power and Ko in the later rounds..
