NEW YORK, 6 August 2008 -- As the eyes of the world turn towards China for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, UNICEF is taking the opportunity to focus attention on one of the country's most marginalized groups -- children affected by AIDS.

On 9 August more than 80 children affected by AIDS will be greeted by Olympic athletes and high-level government officials in the Great Hall of the People. The children are from seven provinces and have either lost parents to AIDS, or live with parents who are infected.

The meeting is part of a series of events that will also feature actor and first UNICEF China AIDS Ambassador Pu Cunxin and gymnast Lou Yun, who won Olympic gold in 1984.

  • Brilliant idea !! using the olypics to send message to the world...i hope that they will be successful in all of their indevores..thank you UNICEF and more power to your group..

  • its a big shame that all this billions of money go into a monumental sport event and self-rightous nationalistic propaganda.

In a world that is already overloaded with sports and the starmania of its idols, give the money to ppl who really need it instead of pushing these hollow ambitions even further.

  • my friends from UN are of the other opinion

  • they should be more concerned about those concentration camps in china, that are killing them to sell there organs

  • well, i generally think there are 2 many diseases in terms of curing each one of them...there is no way, that humans can create a disease free kindom...we rely on each of the diseases to survive

  • they target aids because it would be unreasonable to just target diseases as a whole

you gotta target things one at a time, and if i am correct aids affects the most children, and is one of the hardest to treat because it is so deadly and there is no real treatment for it

  • I wish I could help But I have enough trouble taking care of my children and clothing and feeding them.one thing people need to realize that there are children and families suffering right here in our own countries as well (ie oil and gas, inflation.) It is hurting the whole world. More people are finding it hard to feed their own children let alone someone elses, hats off to those who are able to help such as unicef you are helping more than you know. the kids are the future!!

  • lol? i´m not sure, but i think aids kills more people than any other disease. furthermore you can get aids while you have sex. so you can use condoms or you stop having sex. but without sex we cant get children...

  • I guess they'll do anything to avoid talking about Tibet. What better way to do it, than using children. I can't wait to see when they decide to use animals for some other good cause.

As long as you don't think of Tibet, it's going to be fine.

  • how about the other children affected by other diseases or are dying from other diseases?... why just patients with aids? not fair. i think aids get way too much attention.
