If the Ko'olau Range has Pu'u Manamana, then the Wai'anae Range has Pu'u Kalena! Like it's windward counterpart, Kalena is one of the most dangerous trails on the island. Steep climbs, vertical rockfaces, razor thin ridges, and a dedicated will required, are all present.

Pu'u Kalena is famous for her knife edge dikes that must be traversed to just even reach the final climb to her summit. These dikes are remnants of a dike complex in the northwest rift zone of the old Wai'anae volcano. Rift zones are areas of structural weakness that extends from the summit caldera. Magma would fill these areas and then solidfy. The result are sheer veritcal dikes of dense rock. Erosion then wore away the softer material and the dikes are exposed.

As odd as it seems, Kalena in Hawaiian means "The Lazy One", but don't let the name fool you. This trail takes you up to the summit of the second tallest peak on the island, after Ka'ala. In fact, Ka'ala (4,025ft) and Kalena (3,504ft) are neighbors, joined by a summit ridge which in theory could be traversed, but it's steep, extremely narrow and overgrown.

I like to say that Kalena is Pu'u Manamana and Olomana combined because just like Olomana, the trail also has three peaks with Kalena being the third and final peak. However, unlike Olomana, which has 3 peaks in the reverse order of tallest, Kalena's trio of peaks are tall, taller, and tallest. This hike is not for the faint of heart.
