The Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way

Se formaron en 1985 después de que el cantante Jimmy Somerville dejara la banda Bronski Beat para crear el grupo con el músico Richard Coles. Fueron reclutados por el bajo Dave Renwick el cual también había tocado antes en Bronski Beat. Somerville fue conocido por su forma de cantar con voz de falsete, y fue considerado abiertamente homosexual. La banda tuvo su primer éxito en la lista de los Top 30 de Reino Unido en 1985 con la canción de piano You Are My World. Al año siguiente tuvieron su mayor éxito con una versión de Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' clásico soul de Don't Leave Me This Way (en una version inspirada a su vez en la de Thelma Houston) el cual se mantuvo durante 4 semanas en el número 1 y se convirtió en el sencillo más vendido en Reino Unido durante 1986. También arrasó en los US Top 40.
