Lori Cotler is singing Konnakol, which is the drum language from South India.

These are many different syllables and phrases, which are directly related to the drum. These vocalizations were originally created to teach the drums of South India, but it is an art form in itself.

In this video clip, Lori sings a rhythmic composition in unison with an Arabic drum called the 'Riq,' played by master drummer Glen Velez. http://www.GlenVelez.com

The clapping pattern called 'tala' demonstrates the synchronization between the the vocal rhythms and pulse. in this case it is an 8 beat cycle, called Adi Tala.

  • Beautiful :)

As a riq player, the degree of synchronicity between you and Glen here just blows me away.

I would love to see this solo written down but that's presumably not the point :)

    Rhythmic Blessings, Adam

  • Lori, I use your konnokol videos in my music classes and the kids (and I) are blown away. We try (and i mean try) to attempt to follow along with the hand patterns as we watch. That's such a help. I've heard konnokol enough now after showing it a zillion times to the kids that I actually am starting to "get it." THANKS!

You and Glen are wonderful together. Hope to see you at the AOSA conference!
