A remodeled draft for Slussen in Stockholm was commissioned by the municipal authorities after the competition in 2007. The urban strategy in the proposal from Wingårdhs and Tema Landskap recived general acclaim, however the architecture of the buildings was too massive.
The second edition developed the spatial solution and diminished the impact of the buildings.
The revised study enhanced the qualities that Nicolai Ouroussoff described in the New York Times: The most poetic detail is a small pedestrian bridge whose low form seems to skim over the surface of the water, bringing you closer to the natural scenery and offering an impressive view of the muscular structure that supports the traffic bridge above. The quay and the gorge that connect all movement and activity in one public realm has been opened up, and the square above has been moderated. Urban life is a fragile flower in the north and needs to be taken care of with warmth and intimacy. A large floating jetty next to Gamla Stan will catch sunseekers of all kind. On the other side of the water, ascending the hill has been made easier by escalators, just as elevators once gave mechanical access to the heights of Södermalm. The gorge, Slussenlyftet, is the entrance to Söder as well as to culture and public life of all forms. A literal core, with the capacity to be the most vibrant place in Stockholm.
