As reported on News 12 Brooklyn on May 30th 2007, the NY Department of Health has completed its air sampling study in Greenpoint which concludes that there are no vapors being emitted from the 50 year old underground oil spill located in the eastern industrial section of Greenpoint near the East Williamsburg industrial park. Although Exxon is still responsible for continuing the clean up along the Newtown Creek these findings do put into question the lawsuits filed against the oil company for the property damage. Basil Seggos, chief investigator of Riverkeepers acknowledged that the studies findings were very good news for the residents of Greenpoint, but still looks forward to the day when Newtown Creek will be clean and reclaimed for the neighboring communities.

  • That's not a "health study". It's "vapor intrusion monitoring". This testing has nothing to do with comparing disease, exposure, and sources. There were few homes tested in relation to the size of the plume. And the results only indicate what's happening at a specific site on specific dates. It doesn't represent a study of vapor intrusion when the water table rises or falls.
