These days you see a lot of ignorant islamophobes chanting that Allah was the name of a pagan moon that the Muslims adopted. This video aims to correct this misconception with proof from scholarly sources.

Allah is an Abrahamic name for God Almighty. Its the Arabic version of Elah, Eloah and Alah ... names that are used in the Hebrew and Aramaic Bible for God Almighty.

Abraham built the Kaabah in Makkah and his son Ishmael and his progney settled here. Over time however the people dwelt into polytheism and started worshiping a pantheon with the Abrahimic God ... "Allah" as its head.

So ... Allah was also worshipped as a supreme God by the pagans of Makkah before Islam ... but that does not mean that he was originally a pagan god.

  • Q: But Judaism\Christanity has held that the actual name of God is Yahweh ... and Islam does not mention this name at all.

A: There are several Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) which speak of a hidden "Greatest Name" Ism-e-Azam of Allah. All of these generally point to "Ya Haeu" as the great name. This name not only sounds similar to Yahweh but also has the same meaning ... reflecting Eternal Life.

  • Q: Islam uses a lunar calender with the phase of moon establishes the start and end of months including the Holy month of Ramadhan. Doesn't that prove a link between Allah and the pagan moon-worship etc.

A: Islam attaches no divinity to the moon and regards it as just a creation of Allah. You must remember that Judaism has also used the lunar calendar from prophetic times ... and the new cresent was used to establish the start of months in Talmudic times. Search the web for Hebrew calender.

  • Q: But the Islamic Lunar calender has 360 days ... does that not prove a link to the 360 idols of the pagans of Mekkah?

A: Its pure stupidity to argue for such a relationship but still ... the Islamic Lunar calender does NOT comprise of 360 days. It comprises of 354 or 355 days.

You may consult any web source including wikipedia.

  • Q: If the pagans worshipped Allah before Islam does that not mean that he was originally a pagan god?

A: No. You must remember that one of God's name in the bible is El ... and it is well known that El was worshipped before Judaism as the father god among a pantheon of several lesser deities. Search wikipedia for "El".

  • Q: Why did the pagans worship Allah ?

A: The pre-islamic religion of Makkah traces its origin to Ishmael son of Abraham ... as you can see in the video, Allah\Alah\Elah was the common name of the one true God of Abraham and people initially worshipped Him alone. Over time however the people's faith was corrupted and they introduced a pantheon with several false gods ... and headed by Allah the God of their ancestor Ishmael and Abraham.

  • Q: But Isn't Allah the pagan moon -god etc.

A: No. The pagan moon-god was an idol called Hubal (Hbl) ... not Allah. Hubal was 'also' one of the chief gods of the Quraish and so is often mixed up with Allah by the less knowledgeable western critics of Islam.

Abu Sufyan said, "Superior may be Hubal!" On that the Prophet said (to his companions), "Reply to him." They asked, "What may we say?" He said, "Say: Allah is More Elevated and More Majestic!" (Sahih Bukhari, Bo52, Ha276)
