GREAT video, except for one thing:
Totally obnoxious, nauseating music blocking the beautiful sounds of EMD's finest locomotives.
-
That's a lot of action in 10 minutes, great editing!
I followed the tracks up the branch few years ago, and have seen cars parked at sidings, but have yet to see the Local in action.

@virginiatruckee Oh ok. Yeah in order to get to Hawthorn the tracks go on the north side of Lake Lahonton and then on the east side of Silver Springs. If you drive high way 50 between Fallon and Silver Springs you can clearly see the line. Major cool spots for shots west of Lahonton.

@CoastStarlight11 They still run into Hawthorne, just not past to Mina and Schurz. It's probably still an ammo train as the ammo depot is still the only thing going in Hawthorne. They'd be in big trouble is the gov't closed that. I suspect though that traffic is limited. I didn't realize the tracks went anywhere else through Silver Springs aside from south to Wabuska on the way past Walker Lake to Hawthorne. Thanks for the info!

@virginiatruckee Interesting info. For a while they used to run that Bomb Train into the Hawthorn military base but I guess they stopped that, I had no idea they do not run down as far as Hawthorn any more. There are some really cool spots for shots along these twist, turns, and curves between Silver Springs and Lake Lahontan if that UP local still runs that far.

@CoastStarlight11 No, I have photos but I don't think I got video. I took a trip along the old Carson and Colorado route a couple years ago. UP doesn't run past Hawthorne now, and Mina and Schurz were cool but nearly ghost towns. Then I went over Montgomery pass like the old C&C but got to Laws after the museum closed. I have to return someday, a run down 395 is always worth it!

Have you ever shot the UP local that runs out to Fallon or down the Mina branch line towards Hawthorn and Ft Churchill?
-
@josephsongohan79 Well, in this video we didn't need a scanner. The Reno Local ran out of the Sparks, Nevada yard every morning. It returns in the afternoon.
We just set up by the homeless shelter where the Reno Local line switches off the UP mainline and heads north. Once we saw the train, it was a simple matter to stay ahead of it.
In other cases, yes I use a scanner. You can get a general sense of what's coming by listening to track warrants. MOW workers fill in the details over the air.

do u have a scanner to hear when trains come ???

Nice to see the adds working on your vids
Nice job on the editing. When you are on the train, the 10 mph makes the day go by so slow. Before 2000, when it went all the way to Reno Jct there was a fair amount of 25mph track and long trains to chase.

@yardhog Thanks for the compliment. It would be so nice if the let WPRM run trains from Portola to Reno! Though I know that won't happen ;>)

For those who hate the music, later tonight or tomorrow morning I will upload a music-free version of this video. In addition, when I uploaded this Youtube didn't have HD yet. I had to export it as standard-def to upload it. Now that Youtube has HD the new upload will be in HD.
