Demo of how I use this session file.

The session itself is just a container for several midi clips organized around the circle of fifths. I use it as a reference and a compositional aid. Every note's major and minor key are described by the I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII and VIII chords that are grouped under it's heading. The chords grouped under each heading all sound good in that track's key.

I'd say 90% of "pop" music can be mapped to the circle of fifths. Everything from The Beetles to [INSERT LAME BAND HERE] .

Get the session file here: http://www.ageofthewheel.com/2010/11/circle-of-fifths-chord-resource-in.html

If you use it let me know and if you really like it, consider making a donation.

Cheers

**I've been corrected by music theory guys who know way more theory than me that the last 2 chords in each key aren't actually in that note's chord space but they still work/sound good. Consider the last 2 chords suggested for the key but not actually in the key.**

  • this is a total video joke on you! look at the pace of the audio and visual!!

  • @Dobochoons :)

  • Hey nulldude thanks for this post it is great. I am having a problem seeing the All Chords row when I open the file in Ableton any ideas about this?

  • @thestoneface2 sorry, i took that giant row out. the set in the video is pretty old. it became too much trouble managing that track along with all the other duplicates after adding the scales and extended chords. nothing is stopping you from creating a new track in the set though. the color coordination should make it pretty easy.

  • Hey this is genious and extremely usefull. Thanks for this. Just one thing though. Im getting missing media files so that when I audition the chords from lives browser I dont here anything. I need the sine wav' or i can make my own. If i make my own where do i put them?

  • @thenanomanx something must be different about your library install. just open the session file and find the empty track with the single simpler instance (all other tracks will be routed to it). switch it out with whatever sound you want and save. i chose a simpler sine wav because it should have come with live but you can change that to anything you want.
