Poor Hattori. I like him. I would have liked to have seen him as an Iron Chef, but yeah, Michiba won & deserved to win. I respect him for shooting for the top, but I think he tripped himself up once he started imagining himself w/ his own portrait holding an apple. Hattori stayed classy through, continuing to comment for the show for the rest of it's run. I've never cared who won in Iron Chef. It's always been about challengers like Hattori going for gold & both sides showing good sportsmanship.

@allerdyce I disagree. He was appreciative of Michiba's unique Japanese-leaning dishes, while the more orthodox French dishes from Hattori (excusing that sake blunder) got only sparing praise if any comment at all.

Whatever possessed Hattori to try that sake disaster I can't fathom (it's the one thing even Ichinabe, who was giving anything Fukui came up with the thumbs up for matching with truffles, was surprised about), though I suppose I can understand his wanting to test his mettle against the best of the Iron Chefs.
He did his best, but I think being too ambitious with both that and the pie (about which Robuchon eyed him wryly) did him in.
With Michiba, Robuchon was complimenting a fellow master.

Hattori-san carried himself with great honor on the battlefield of Kitchen Stadium, even in defeat. He truly laid himself on the line. His dishes were clever and the meal in total was well constructed with the primary taster Robuchon in mind. But Kitchen Stadium is a fickle mistress and teaching is not the same as competing. It showed here though I was glad to see him try.. The room got a little dusty when Fukui-san said "I'm proud to call both of these men my friends"

Iron chef Interational perhaps if yukio had won?

According to iron chef wiki, this sake was one of the 3 worst "dishes"....

At first I felt bad for Hattori and I realized, I don't know this man. Yet, I feel as if I know them all by now. And then I realized, I wish I did. I wish I was part of this world and these people. I also need to work harder.

I bet Machiba was tempted to lose on purpose, just to see what Hatori can do as an Iron Chef
-
@Obdushaer I think it's because he really wanted to show that he can be the best Iron Chef and was confident he could beat Michiba, who is the best of the trio. Gotta give him credit for trying.

Kind of a bittersweet thing to watch poor Doc get roflstomped by Michiba. But like many of you said, I'm not really sure why Hatori even challenge Michiba in the first place.
